Chapter 6
Baldwin kept everyone at the party past three. Mia had shut down the bar at two, hoping the crowd wouldnât revolt, but she didnât think drunk witnesses were okay for Baldwin. He looked on as everyone climbed back on the van.
âWhat a waste of a day.â He pulled off his hat and wiped his forehead with a handkerchief. âMost of those people didnât like Robin, but then again, they said she kept the reunions going. Did you know that theyâd invested their original class money? And then when the school closed, she somehow got access to any class money that was left when she decided to do the all-school reunion. Someone I talked to was treasurer last year, and she said they had close to a million in investments as well as a checking account for Robinâs day-to-day use.â
âWait, a school reunion committee had that much in funding? No wonder she told me to name my price. I should have asked for more.â Mia nodded to the kitchen. âDo you mind if we talk in there? I can get you a plate of treats.â
âSounds great. They sent over sandwiches, but I donât tend to eat a lot while things are going.â He followed her into the kitchen and sank into a chair. âSo what did you find out today?â
âWhat do you mean?â Mia dished up one of each dessert and put the plate in front of Baldwin. âCoffee, iced tea, or soda?â
âCoffee. Thereâs nothing like good coffee and brownies, right?â He picked up the one with the walnut on top. âThis is cute. Itâs a warning, right? That the brownie has nuts?â
âExactly. Robin said there wasnât anyone with any food allergies, but then again, she wasnât the most reliable narrator for anyoneâs needs besides her own.â Mia poured her own coffee and sat down by Baldwin. âThat wasnât nice, but I wasnât impressed with Robinâs ability to be empathetic the few times I met her. Okay, so I did do some checking. Roger was having an affair.â
Baldwin held up a hand. âI already know. But, according to Roger, they had an open marriage. Each was allowed to have relationships outside the marriage.â
âThatâs the stupidest thing Iâve ever heard. Why get married then if you donât want to be with the same person long term. Sex isnât the only part of a marriage; I get that. But when a marriage is alive, it should be only within the marriage.â She sipped her coffee. âYou think Iâm old fashioned.â
âIf more people thought the way you did, Iâd have less callouts on domestic issues. Thatâs for sure.â He smiled at her. âSorry, I interrupted you.â
âThatâs Rogerâs story; but according to Janie, Robin was going to divorce him because of his extramarital fun,â Mia said. âDid she tell you that too?â
âJanie was going off about how it wasnât the people from the Witchcraft Club. That they were only playing when they said Robin should die.â He checked his notes. ââNone of our other
